The Modern Man

Move over Rodger Berman, known for his use of ‘guy liner’ accompanying his stylist wife Rachel Zoe at Paris Fashion Week, your typical modern man is now widening his beauty horizons.

The pressure to look good in todays 21st Century forces the new and explosive stereotype of “The Modern Man” into todays society. With many men fitting the bill such as Russel Brand, Zac Efron, Noel Fielding and many more, the modern man stereotype is soon fast becoming the norm.

According to a survey of 1,000 men in the US and UK conducted by JWT (a marketing communications company), men are increasingly feeling the pressure to beautify themselves. The study, entitled “The State of Men,” opens up male bathroom cabinets and let’s us take a peek at what products are most used by the opposite sex.

These are the top-ranked beauty products and treatments used by men:

54 percent skincare products (moisturiser and eye cream)

33 percent waxing/hair removal

39 percent lip balm

29 percent manicure

24 percent facials

13 percent eyebrow waxing

19 percent fake tan

9 percent foundation

11 percent bronzer

10 percent concealer

26 percent none

With top premium fashion houses such as Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs releasing man-friendly beauty lines and South Korean fellows applying eye pencil and foundation, it’s not hard to see these numbers as a reality. Frankly, I think it’s refreshing that men are now allowing themselves to indulge in all of the fun that the beauty world has to offer. Whilst relishing the time to enhance their appearance.

However the study also found with all of this beauty loot comes a slew of insecurities. The top one? Beer bellies followed by love handles, lack of six packs and man boobs. It’s no wonder that 8 out of 10 men surveyed believe there’s as much pressure for men to have a good body as there is for women.

Prevention is the solution

Wanting to appear youthful and younger looking for longer is something everyone thinks about, people may not necessarily vocalise their thoughts but subconsciously this is an ever-growing thought.

The use of moisturisers, serums, face masks and exfoliators help to boost the skins collegian levels, keeping the skin feeling refreshed, smooth and youthful. Hydrating skincare will help to keep skin plump, radiant and luminous for longer, whilst the use of no cosmetic skincare regime could bring the ageing process to your bathroom mirror sooner than expected.

Environmental studies show with pollution raising for several decades, the summers becoming warmer and winters colder, everyday life takes its toll on our skin. Some pollution properties hit skin deep down into the dermis meaning the damage isn’t visual immediately.

 Prevention is the solution

Preventing the signs of ageing with the use of a daily cleanser, toner, moisturiser and eye cream will help keep the skin hydrated and balanced helping to fight signs of dry skin, fine lines, pigmentation and the overall ageing process.

A new addition to my skincare regime, with a retail price of £62.50 is the well-known Repair Serum from cosmetics giants Bobbi Brown.

Luxurious and milky, this concentrated repair serum comforts skin as it firms and moisturises. Anti-ageing ingredients such as Vitamin C and a powerful peptide help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles both instantly and over time. Meadow foam Seed Oil hydrates while WheatBran and Olive Extracts help your skin hold on to moisture giving everlasting hydration to the skin. Clary Sage Extract helps reveal a clearer, more radiant complexion helping to improve damaged skin surface and pigmentation.

Even if you believe your skin is perfectly fine or you don’t need to worry about the ageing process as of yet, remember “prevention is the solution”. Preventing the inevitable will help secure the skins surface and prolong the ageing process for as long as possible helping your skin to remain plump, youthful and radiant for longer whilst protecting against investable dangers such as pollution, diet and health.

Top Tip: After cleaning and toning with your favourites, smooth a pea sized amount onto the face and gently press into the skin before smoothing over the remaining amount with your finger tips.

This helps to push the serum down into the skins dermis helping the skin to take it down deeper into the layered skin.

After 3 weeks of using the breakthrough product my skin is left feeling fresh, incredibly plump and fine lines reduced. I use slightly more than the recommended amount to ensure my whole face receives the same amount of serum pushed down into the skin for an overall treatment. Using before my daily moisturiser this must have product with a milky smooth texture has helped to reduce appears of fatigue, fine lines and pigmentation giving my skin a youthful glow.

Three years after the release of Teenage Dream, the Californian pop princess is back with a bang hoping her new album can follow in its success.

The multi-platinum selling album smashed it’s way into the record books for producing five number one singles, and now Katy Perry is back with her third studio album, Prism. A mix of electropop bangers and tear jerking power ballads, Perry delivers a fearlessly honest snapshot of her delicate private life.

As the lead songwriter of the albums opening track, ‘Roar’, Perry kicks off with stadium sized guitar riffs, complete with a rousing chorus, stomping mid tempo beat and an epic sing along ear snagging hook. ‘Roar’ promises to deliver whilst creatively reflects the philosophy of the album.

Perry’s assertive return is underscored by other early tastes from the album including ‘Dark Horse’, which features a menacing bass-line, furious beat and a sharply styled guest verse from Juicy J.

Prism’s triumphant parade continues with the banging house-influenced groove and a whistling hook of Perry’s euphoric, “sleep all day – party all night” anthem ‘Walking On Air’, this soaring ’90s house number innovatively celebrates the highs of being in love.

‘Legendary Lovers’ has effortless hints of Bollywood in the production; a thumping anthem that flattens the jungle around it like a herd of elephants. Followed by flirty pop-gem ‘Birthday’, giving fans what they really want which takes us back to Perry’s ‘California Girls’ days as she teases the boys with her assets, once again accompanied by a foot stomping pop beat and Perry’s famous echoing vocals throughout.

Willing to bare her heart throughout the record, ‘Unconditionally’ reveals Perry’s naivety for accommodating her ex-husbands past by singing “I will love you unconditionally”. The way Perry turns dark and pensive on the more subdued ‘Ghost’, haunted by her ex husband as he ended their marriage by mobile phone, Perry sings “You sent a text, It’s like the wind changed your mind”.

Staying true to its namesake, Prism displays the full spectrum of Katy Perry’s emotions, but the star leaves the hardest hit until last. A tender tearjerker track, ‘By The Grace Of God’ is led by light piano and soft cool vocals as she confesses overcoming suicidal thoughts following the breakdown of her marriage. Completing Prism sounding like a woman and an artist who’s finally found herself, Katy Perry sets herself up for another record breaking studio smasher.

Semaine dé la Mode

Paris fashion week saw the return of Louis Vuitton hitting the catwalk, striking jawlines and unforgettable pouts all tailored with the latest fashion.

This year was all about mensware and the rise, fall and rise again of the oversized bag and strict tailoring.

The Louis Vuitton collection gave a packed out collection full of shocks and surprises, firmly reinforcing The Vuitton love.

Louis Vuitton has always been one of my favourite designers of all time, simplicity, sharp sophistication and heart wrenching fashion one off’s Louis Vuitton will always be a required taste, but gaining the required taste allows you to understand the true extent of the fashion and beautiful creation of the brand.

The show-opening overcoat featured spots created by needle-punching mink through cashmere, and the show-closing evening-wear oozed sophistication — whether rendered in classic strict blacks and midnight blues or an intense “Garden in Hell” print by artists Jake and Dinos Chapman — just pure opulence. If this is Louis Vuitton’s take on travel, lets just say I’ll be booking my ticket.

Paris fashion week was one not to be missed and with Louis Vuitton firmly leading the way, the excitement ever grows ready for the next one.

Last night saw the highly anticipated return of 85th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre, Hollywood and hosted by first timer Seth Macfarlane, the stars hit the red carpet drenched in Dior, Chanel, Valentino, Alexander McQueen and many more.

But who wore it best?

Amanda Seyfried went for instant high impact hitting the red carpet with Alexander McQueen and I can safely say it paid off. Interesting necklines and embellishment gave her gown the necessary impact on the red-carpet that others lacked. Flaw length yet figure hugging, Amanda almost floated down the red carpet effortlessly looking chic. 8/10

Dior beauty Charlize Theron stormed the red carpet looking demure in a white Dior Couture number whilst also sporting a shocking new pixie crop which, she described as a “freeing experience” help to give her the shock element. Head to toe looking demure as she wowed onlookers in stunning white peplum It was clear shaving her hair had not affected Charlize’s confidence. 9/10
Woman of the night, Best Actress winner for Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer Lawrence hit the red carpet resulting in a second triumph in the style stakes in her strapless Dior Haute Couture gown. Eye catching and looking perfection with a simple yet stylish gown, Miss Lawrence wowed on lookers as she posed for photographers with what many people will agree the dress of the night. 10/10

Winning Best Supporting Actress was an emotional triumph for Anne Hathaway and with a second victory on the red carpet, in a pale pink Prada number, Anne effortlessly beamed down the red carpet in this safe nude garment letting her competition know she is a fierce competitor in the style steaks. 7/10

After an emotional night and unexpectedly taking home an Oscar for her vocals on the box office smash Skyfall, Adele played it safe in the style steaks with a glitzy stylish flaw length gown from British designer Jenny Packham. Looking eye catching and glamorous as always Adele strutted down the red carpet beaming with joy. 7/10

The time has come…

Oscar fever 2013 is officially here and today saw The Oscars hit The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Held perfectly together by first time presenter, Seth Macfarlane, this was certainly a memorable and emotional academy awards.

Daniel Day-Lewis has made a well deserved, Oscars history by winning the best actor prize for a third time. His third time victory came for playing America’s 16th President in Steven Spielberg’s box office smash Lincoln.

After taking a short stumble before her acceptance speech, Jennifer Lawrence won the Oscar for best actress for her role as a young widow in Silver Linings Playbook. Ben Affleck’s Iran hostage thriller Argo won the highly anticipated and most talked about award for best picture.

Watching her mother play Fantine on broadway when a young child an emotional Anne Hathaway won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role as tragic factory worker Fantine in the spectacular, unmissable and breath-taking movie musical Les Miserables.

Christoph Waltz won his second Oscar for best supporting actor in a Quentin Tarantino, this time as a German bounty hunter in the slave revenge story Django Unchained.

Adele struggled through tears to thank the Bond producers and her co-writer Paul Epworth who collected the Oscar for best original song on the UK number 1, Skyfall.

The awards drew to an end leaving hopefuls of an Oscar already awaiting 2014, but left the luckily few feeling content and overjoyed. Each and every winner was truly more than deserving for their award.

Now, until the next time …

Can’t be tamed?

After a night of glitz, glamour and awards, the Brit Awards 2013 are over, but did they even start?

The Brit Awards are notoriously known for their outlandish live appearances and unpredictable performances, however this year it just seemed too predictable from the beginning. After  quick glance back at the nominees back in January it was almost certain which stars had already won. amongst the nominee’s were a few surprises such as Calvin Harris for best male and Jessie Ware for best female, which both failed to pick up nominations. Emeli Sandé – whose debut LP Our Version of Events was last year’s biggest seller – took home the coveted ‘Best Album’ award, while Mumford & Sons, whose latest set Babel was the fastest-selling record of 2012, predictably won ‘Best Band.

The night was steadily held together by James Corden who even himself seemed more interested in last years show as he kept referring to the time he cut Adele’s speech short. His small joke towards Harry Styles involving Sharon Osborne and Annie Lennox offered a brief moment of relief.

Awards aside, the opening performance from Muse of ‘Supremacy’ – accompanied by a wall of violinists and indoor fireworks – was spectacular, while Taylor Swift completed her transition from doe-eyed country singer to fully fledged popstar with a dress-ripping rendition of ‘Trouble’. Possibly the best performance of the night. Frustratingly, neither picked up a much-deserved gong. The return of Justin Timeberlake’s performance of his new single mirrors was an average performance but due to the lack of entertainment throughout the show was seen to be amazing. When comparing the Brits to the VMA’s there’s no competition, the VMA’s win it hands down.

Fingers crossed next year will give us something to talk about?

Made In Chelsea.

15th October, tonight has been all about the return of …  Made In Chelsea. Bitching, bust ups, cheating, shopping spree’s and cat fights all in a simple episode of the wealthy Chelsea reality show.

Everybody wealthy guilty pleasure returned to screens tonight as we saw the hugely anticipated return of the Chelsea based reality TV show. After the previous series’ shot the cast members into fame and became a brilliant success throughout Europe, there was still a sense of just touching the tip of the ice burg with the mysterious and model like cast members. This series already began with a dramatic announcement of Spencer Matthews toying with his old flame Louise Thompson, who both were supposed to have separated last series as Spencer Matthews joined the reality TV show of “The Bachelor  – this created an enigma for the audience as everyone is already confused with what the current situation is. Will Louise Thompson be that gullible to take love rat Spencer back?  The dramatic comeback of the Chelsea based reality show also gave the audience their second shock as Ollie Locke, notorious for changing his sexuality throughout the series’ and always unlucky in love, announced a shock decision to cut off his model/lion-like mane. As fellow Made In Chelsea fans will realise, Ollie Locke’s hair adds to his personality and overall persona, will this be a regrettable change or just a damn right stupid decision? Made In Chelsea’s return also saw the comeback of Jamie Laing, lovable rogue and all round favourite from the reality TV hit, Jamie has been on a relationship roller coaster throughout the series’ of the Chelsea based show but has successfully bounced back, happier than ever, living life to the full taking a luxurious holiday with the boys on a glamorous Yacht off the south coast of France.

The return of the guilty pleasure, Made in Chelsea also saw an income of dramatic newbies;  Andy Jordan, Sam Cussins and Stevie Johnson are all 23 and are best friends of the Candy Kittens entrepreneur, Jamie Lang. Also Sophia Sassoon who is an ex of love rat and resident tosser, Spencer Matthews, and Richard Dinan finally kicked skinny minny Kimberly to the curb and replaced her with new fancy lady, Rose Cochrane-Stack. This continued to see the first bust up of the new series with newbie Andy lock horns with love rat Spencer Matthews over damsel in no distress Louise Thompson. We could clearly see Spencers crown slipping and becoming worries as more of the new males took interest into bittersweet Louise. So all in all I can safely say Made in Chelsea is back with bang and holding more secrets and surprises in store than ever. Will Louise continue to be a doormat? Is there something behind Ollie’s new look? Whats next for Spencer and Andy? Will Cheska’s meddling continue? Only one way to find out, Made In Chelsea 10pm E4, Monday nights.
